The Town of Micanopy features two historic cemeteries that still serve local families. When founded in the 19th century, the Micanopy Historic Cemetery was provided for white residents and the Haynes Memorial Cemetery for black residents. But now both cemeteries are open to people of all races, religions and personal beliefs.
Micanopy Cemetery Association
The Micanopy Historic Cemetery was founded by physician H.L Montgomery in the early 1800s on land later deeded to the cemetery trustees in 1897. The earliest burial is dated 1826, although there are many ancestors from the 1700s laid to rest here. The cemetery is the final resting place for more than 2,000 people, including 100 war veterans. Centrally located on Smith Street, the cemetery is also a contemplative place to walk and explore.
The Micanopy Historic Cemetery was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.
Micanopy Historic Cemetery Association (MHCA) is a not-for-profit organization (FEI #59-2374975). Membership is comprised of those persons who purchased burial rights in the cemetery. MHCA currently handles lot sales, burial records, and maintenance. Family members or those interested in maintaining the cemetery and its records are invited to apply for MHCA membership.
Burial rights are reserved for residents of the Micanopy 32667 zip code, relatives or descendants of persons buried at the cemetery. Older sections of the cemetery have been closed for burials, and current burials are in Sections A, B, C and H.
The MHCA Annual Meeting is the third Saturday in January at which time business decisions and plans for the continual day-to-day operation are made. Lot holders and other interested individuals are invited to attend.
We welcome donations and volunteer community service projects.

Haynes Memorial Historic Cemetery Association
The Haynes Memorial Cemetery was formerly Micanopy's "Colored Cemetery" and is named after Irving H. Haynes (aka Haines) who served many roles during his very long life, including gravedigger to both cemeteries after the end of World War I. He passed in 1935, and many of his descendants still live here. The Haynes Memorial Cemetery is a rural haven under mature oaks.
The cemetery remains active and open to all races.
